Spritelane

Five rules. Short on purpose.

Spritelane works because everyone here is making something, or wants to watch it being made. These rules keep it that way.

  1. 01

    Show the work.

Posts are about a game being made: progress, problems, decisions, cuts.

A devlog can be a GIF and two lines or a long postmortem. What it can't be is an ad. Trailers and launch announcements are welcome when they sit on top of a lane that shows how the game got there.

  2. 02

    Tools are fine. Farms aren't.

Use whatever helps you build. Asset flips, reskins and generated shovelware get removed.

Engines, store assets, plugins, code assistants and upscalers are all tools. A game made mostly of bought or generated parts with nothing of yours holding them together isn't a game we'll host. If you used generated assets anywhere players will see them, say so in your devlog.

  3. 03

    No engagement bait.

No follow-for-follow, no “like if you agree”, no rage posts. Write for people, not for a feed.

That includes vote rings, fake accounts, and posting the same update five times to stay on top. There's no algorithm to game here, so it only annoys people.

  4. 04

    Feedback is specific.

“The jump feels floaty after the first bounce” beats “nice”. Say what you saw.

Be honest and be kind about it. Talk about the game, not the person. Developers can mark comments as useful, and useful comments are the ones people see first.

  5. 05

    Real links, real names.

One project page per game, pointing to where people can actually play or wishlist it.

Don't post a game you didn't make, or someone else's screenshots as your own. Studio names and handles are fine; pretending to be someone else isn't.

What happens when a rule is broken

Most of the time, a moderator gets in touch and asks for a change. Edit the post, add the missing credit, take the duplicate down, and that’s the end of it.

Some things skip the conversation and come down straight away:

  • Games that are mostly generated or bought, with nothing of the developer’s holding them together
  • Stolen work: screenshots, art, code or devlogs that belong to someone else
  • Fake accounts, vote rings and spam
  • Harassment, hate, or targeting anyone, developer or player

Repeated or serious breaks can lose a game its mark, or lose an account its place on Spritelane.

Reporting

Once we open, every game, post and comment will have a report button. Until then, write to hello@spritelane.com or use the contact page. A person reads every report.

Disagreeing with a decision

Moderators make mistakes. If you think we got one wrong, tell us why and we’ll look again with someone who wasn’t part of the first decision.
