Spritelane

Fair questions.

The basics

What is Spritelane, in one line?
A devlog community for indie games, where developers post progress as they build and players follow along. Every developer is checked by a person, so there's no AI slop to wade through.
Who is it for?
Indie developers who want somewhere to post progress that doesn't get buried, and players who like finding games early. Solo devs, small studios, students and hobbyists all count. If you're making a game yourself, it's for you.
When does it open?
When the first group of lanes is worth reading. We'd rather not promise a date we can't keep. Everyone on the list hears first, and founding members get in before the public.
Is it free?
Yes. Reading, following, commenting and posting a lane are free. If we ever add paid extras, you will never have to pay to be seen.
How is this different from itch.io devlogs or Reddit?
itch and Reddit are open to anything, which is great for reach and bad for signal. On Spritelane every developer is checked, posts stay in order, and there are no like counts. It's smaller on purpose. Post here and cross-post wherever you like.

For developers

Why do developers have to apply?
Because that's the whole point. An open sign-up fills with content farms within weeks. A person checks every developer, so players can trust what they find.
What do you look for in an application?
A real game in progress and a real person making it. Early is fine. A greybox and a few screenshots is enough. We're not judging polish.
Do I need a Steam page?
No. An itch page, a repo, a portfolio or a thread of GIFs all work. Anything that shows the game exists and that you made it.
What happens after I apply?
A person reads it. If it's a fit, you'll get a founding invite by email before launch. If it's not yet, we'll tell you that too.
My game is early and ugly. Should I wait?
No, this is the best time to start a lane. Grey boxes, placeholder art and broken builds are what make the later posts believable.
Can studios join, or only solo devs?
Both. Studios apply the same way. We just want to know there's a real team behind the account and someone who'll answer comments.
Can I cross-post my devlogs elsewhere?
Yes. Your posts are yours. Put them on itch, Steam, Reddit or your own site too, wherever it helps.

For players

Do players have to apply?
No. Players just sign up. Only developers are checked, because they're the ones posting games.
What do founding players get?
A founding badge on your profile for good, access before the public, and a real say in what we build next.
Can I comment on games?
Yes, once we open. Developers can mark a comment as useful, and useful comments are shown first. Low-effort ones sink.

AI and the mark

Can I use AI tools?
Tools that help you build are fine. What we keep out is games where the AI did the making: generated art and writing passed off as craft, and games pumped out by the dozen. If you're putting real hours into a game, you belong here.
What is the Spritelane mark?
A stamp a game earns by showing how it was made, over weeks of devlogs. A moderator grants it, it can't be bought, and verified games can show it on their Steam and itch pages.
Can a game lose the mark?
Yes. If a moderator finds a game isn't what its lane says it is, the mark comes off and the game may be removed.

Privacy

What happens to my email?
We use it to tell you about Spritelane and nothing else. We never sell or share it. Ask and we'll delete it.
