Spritelane

Games made by people.

Spritelane is a devlog community for indie games. We’re building it because good games are getting harder to find, and the people making them are getting harder to hear.

The problem

Making a game takes months or years. Making something that looks like a game in a store listing now takes an afternoon. Generated art, asset flips and template reskins pile up in every new-releases list, and the devlogs of people doing the real work scroll past in a feed that rewards posting more, not making more.

Players lose too. Finding a good game means sorting through the noise first, and most people give up before they get there.

What we’re doing about it

Spritelane gives every game a lane: its development history, in order, from the first grey box to launch. Developers apply and a person checks every one. Games that keep their lane going can earn the Spritelane mark, which they can take to their store pages. Players follow the games they care about and see every post, newest first.

The full reasoning is in why we’re building Spritelane.

A lane: one game, frame by frame, from grey boxes to a playable demo. Drawn by us to show the idea. On Spritelane, every game has one.

What we believe

Four things we won’t trade away.

  • Process is proof.

The best evidence a game is real is the trail it leaves while it's being made. We'd rather read that trail than guess from a screenshot.

  • People check people.

Every developer is read by a human before they post. It's slower than a sign-up button. It's also the only filter that works.

  • Small and good beats big and noisy.

We're letting developers in a group at a time. The first lanes set the tone for everything after them.

  • Nobody pays to be seen.

No ads, no boosted posts, no algorithm. You see the games you follow, in order.

Where we are now

Spritelane isn’t open yet. We’re reading developer applications, building the first pieces, and writing about it in the journal as we go. Founding members get in before the public, and get a say in how things work.
